Chiropractic care improves type I diabetes (case study)

(NaturalNews) Over 3 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with type I diabetes. This disorder is considered an auto-immune condition where the immune system destroys the insulin producing Beta cells of the pancreas. A new case study showed how chiropractic adjustments dramatically improved a 4 year old child's ability to manage this disorder.

A large UK study has revealed that type 1 diabetes has increased 5-fold in children less than 5 years of age between the years of 1985 and 2004. During those same years there was a doubling in children under 15 years of age being diagnosed with type I diabetes. Studies in other European countries and the US have shown similar results.

Environmental Risk Factors

The most common risk factors include exposure to environmental toxins and other stressors. The list of toxins includes pesticides, herbicides, and household cleaning agents. Additionally, food allergens such as pasteurized cow's milk, gluten and processed soy, peanuts, & eggs are thought to be possible triggers. Low maternal and infant vitamin D3 levels and less than 6 months of breast feeding appear to be very serious risk factors as well. Birth trauma affecting the upper cervical spine has been hypothesized as a risk factor by some experts.

A recent case study published in the November 2011 edition of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, & Family Health documents a case of a 4 year old child, who had terrific results stabilizing her blood sugar through chiropractic care.

The child's mother described her as being a very healthy baby, who was not vaccinated at all and was breastfed for a full 12 months. She was officially diagnosed with type I diabetes at 2 years of age. The family ate a healthy, whole food based diet and avoided processed foods and other environmental toxins.

Understanding the role of Neuroendoimmunology

The nervous, endocrine and immune system are hardwired and work together to create optimal responses for the body to adapt and heal appropriately. The new study of neuroendoimmunology looks closely at this intimate relationship between bodily systems.

Neural dysfunctions due to spinal subluxations are stressful to the body and cause abnormal changes that lead to a poorly coordinated immune response. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to reduce subluxations and boost the coordinated responses of the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems.

The patient was diagnosed with spinal subluxations in the upper cervical region. She began chiropractic care and was seen a total of 24 times over a 2 month period. During this 2 month period, she experienced a decrease in hemoglobin A1C from 7.2% to 6.5%. She also decreased the amount of insulin used from 15 units to 11 units per day.

These results are quite remarkable because the literature states that intensive medical treatment of type I diabetes often does not succeed in lowering A1C levels under 7.0%. Chiropractic care works by optimizing the neural connections throughout the body. This enhanced brain-body connection works to better coordinate immunity and hormone function throughout the body. This improvement in type I diabetes management is most likely a result of better cellular communication.

Study Finds U.S. Healthcare Shortens Life Expectancy

Brian Bartholomew - Sunday, November 27, 2011

The U.S. healthcare system is being blamed for shortening the American life expectancy.  Our nation which spends two and half time more than most other 'civilized' nations is demonstrating that more pills and more money spent on crisis care, does not equal a healthier, longer living society.  This Columbia University study found that the 15 year survival rate for Americans 45-65 is actually decreasing compared to that of the other 12 civilized nations.1

"What really surprised researchers was that all of the usual suspects -- smoking, obesity, traffic accidents, and homicides -- are not the culprits," The main reasons for such a drop in life expectancy found by this study was the fact that so many Americans rely on fragmented, costly, specialized care. If more Americans had a doctor or healthcare provider who knew them personally and that gave them holistic, coordinated, less invasive, less costly care we would save billions of dollars and thousands of lives annually.

Our goal at BFC is to provide you, your family and your friends with the best holistic, natural chiropractic and wellness care.  We want to see you save money on health care. We take pride in getting you results and are excited that so many families are getting healthier, working with their M.D.s and getting off dangerous medications. We love seeing individuals staying well and learning how to improve their health naturally.

Our Top 5 Suggestions to Get and Stay Well:

1. Make your weekly or bi-weekly chiropractic adjustments shown to help improve the functioning of your immune system, reduce stress and help you live longer

2. Follow our healing diet and incorporate our recipes into you normal health routine starting with a healthy breakfast or lunch option or our 100 day diet options

3. Start each morning with a large glass of water or lemon water, 10 min reading a relaxing or spiritual book then do a 15-20 min resistance or burst workout.

4.  Learn about how and why we need to detoxify 24 hours per day and what you can do to allow that to happen.

5.  Speak your truth, live the life you love and do something to empower others and help them gain the greatest wealth: health!

Prevent the Common Cold or Flu

Prevent the Common Cold or Flu

Posted By Dr. Axe On December 23, 2009 @ 7:00 am In Cold & Flu | 11 Comments

[1]Taking medications to treat or prevent cold and flu symptoms does just that: they only address the symptoms. The underlying cause of the illness is still present in your body. What you have done by suppressing the symptoms is ignore your body’s warning signs that something is amiss and your immune system is having to work overtime. The synthetic medications also add to the toxic burden your body already has to deal with every day.

Instead of waiting until you experience these cold and flu symptoms, your best bet is to build up and strengthen your body’s natural defense mechanism–your immune system. If you do still experience cold and flu symptoms, don’t worry. Your body always does the right thing at the right time. A cough means your body needs to rid itself of mucus. A fever means the body needs to raise its temperature to kill a virus. Learn to recognize these symptoms as natural processes of the body.

As I’m sure you know, I definitely do NOT recommend you get a flu shot [2] as a preventative measure for the flu. These vaccines educate your immune system [3] in an improper and unnatural manner and often contain dangerous chemicals and preservatives. [4]

There are a number of vitamins, minerals and herbs that will naturally boost your immune system, which will be much more effective at preventing or fighting off a cold or flu. It’s important to remember, though, that herbal supplements should not be taken for an extended period of time.

Herbal Supplements

Brewer’s Yeast

  • Brewer’s yeast contains B vitamins, chromium and protein. It is used for cold, flu and other respiratory tract infections.
  • Brewer’s yeast stimulates intestinal enzymes to help relieve diarrhea, fights bacteria in the intestines and improves immune response to viruses that infect the lungs.
  • Research has found that Brewer’s yeast reduces the risk of getting a cold or the flu and helps symptoms dissipate more quickly.

Echinacea

  • Echinacea acts as an anti-inflammatory, which can help reduce bronchial symptoms of cold and flu.
  • Echinacea directly attacks yeast and other kinds of fungus.
  • Different preparations have different concentrations of Echinacea. Some common preparations and dosages include:
  • Tablets containing 6.78 milligrams of Echinacea extract, two tablets 3 times a day.
  • 900 milligrams of Echinacea root tincture daily.
  • 5-6 cups of Echinacea tea on the first day of symptoms, and then 1 cup a day thereafter.

Elderberry

  • The flowers and berries of elderberry is said to boost the immune system, treat flue and relieve sinus pain.
  • Elderberry does seem to attack flu viruses and reduce bronchial inflammation. A preliminary study found that it reduced severity and length of flu symptoms when given at the first signs of symptoms.

Garlic

  • Garlic has antibiotic and antibacterial properties. In a recent study, people that took a garlic supplement for 12 weeks got about 60% fewer colds than those who didn’t and recovered faster if they did get a cold.
  • The best way to take garlic, aside from adding it liberally to your dishes when you cook, is to swallow a raw clove. You might need to cut it in half if it is too large. Bite down once to release the allicin, then swallow with water like a pill.
  • If you find this method too odorous, garlic capsules are fine to take as well.

Olive Leaf

  • Olive leaf is proving to have potent anti-viral properties and is often prescribed for cold and flu. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Vitamins and Minerals

Baking Soda

  • Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is derived from a naturally-occurring mineral. It may be used to combat a whole host of disorders and works by decreasing acidosis in the body.
  • In the early 1900’s, Dr. Volney Cheney found that baking soda helped reduce flu symptoms and greatly reduced the risk of contracting the flu to begin with. He began using bicarbonate of soda to treat colds and flu and found that “in many,  many instances, within 36 hours the symptoms would have entirely abated.”
  • Cheney also claimed that those who took daily doses of baking soda on his advisement reported that they were among the few that didn’t get the flu when it rampaged through their schools.
  • Dr. Walter Bastedo reported that sodium bicarbonate soothes mucous membranes and dissolves thick mucous.
  • A number of doctors even advocate the use of baking soda to treat cancer.
  • To treat cold or flu, dissolve ½ teaspoon of baking soda in water 6 times a day at the first day of symptoms, 4 times a day the second, and two times on the third.

Vitamin C

  • Vitamin C can boost the immune system and reduce the severity of cold and flu symptoms.
  • Take 1,000mg of Vitamin C daily to ward off a cold or the flu and up to 4,000mg daily when you are experiencing symptoms.

Vitamin D

  • Vitamin D is produced in the body by sunlight [5] and regulates the expression of over 2,000 genes, including those of the immune system. Recent research has found that low vitamin D levels are linked to higher rates of cold, flu and respiratory infections.
  • Many physicians believe that current recommended daily amounts of vitamin D are far too low, and that 2,000 rather than 200-400 units per day is a better choice.
  • To treat cold or flu, take 2,000 units per kilogram of body weight once a day for 3 days.
  • You can also order home testing kits to test your vitamin D levels.

Zinc

  • Zinc may lessen the symptoms of the cold virus but excessive amounts aren’t good for you. Zinc pills and sprays do not seem to be effective.
  • Take 50-100mg of zinc daily to ward off or treat cold and flu symptoms.

Man with the fluChiropractic Care

  • During the 1918 flu epidemic, flu patients that received chiropractic care survived much more readily than those that didn’t.
  • Matthew McCoy, chiropractic journal editor says, “These results are not so surprising given what we now know about the interaction between the nervous system and the immune system. We know that chiropractic has beneficial effects on immunoglobulins, B-lymphocytes (white blood cells), pulmonary function and other immune system processes.”
  • More recent studies have found that chiropractic care reduced the incidence of colds and flu by 15%.

Other Tips

Drink plenty of fluids

Fluid helps your body to flush bacteria and viruses from your system. Drink approximately half your body weight in ounces daily of either spring water or reverse osmosis filtered water. Green and black teas are potent immune system-boosters and antioxidants.

Probiotics

Restoring the beneficial bacteria [6] in your gut will boost your immune system considerably.

Get Fresh Air

Indoor winter environments can be a source of concentrated toxins and germs. The dry air we inhale as we heat our homes during the winter makes airways more reactive and sensitive to viruses.

An added bonus to time spent outdoors in the winter is the extra bit of sunlight you receive.

Manage Stress

Simple relaxation has been found to increase immune system cells. Chronic stress [7], on the other hand, has been found to increase both the risk and duration of cold and flu substantially.

Pick one or more method of busting stress [7] in your life.

Eating Nuts Good For Your Heart and For Depression

Nuts may fend off heart disease

(NaturalNews) A recent study conducted by scientists at the University of Barcelona in collaboration with the Human Nutrition Unit of the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, reveals that eating nuts can elevate serotonin levels in the bodies of individuals suffering from metabolic syndrome. (Metabolic Syndrome puts individuals at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes). Unfortunately, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the USA alone has been estimated at approximately 25%.

Serotonin is an important hormone and neurotransmitter with a dual function in the human body. While it is located mostly in the enterochromaffin cells in the gut, where it regulates intestinal movement, smaller amounts of serotonin can also be found in the central nervous system, where it helps regulate mood, appetite and sleep. Moreover, elevated serotonin levels correlate positively with good heart health.

In the study carried out by the Spanish team, only one ounce of mixed nuts (revealed to be walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds) per day was sufficient to produce noteworthy results. In addition to their influence on serotonin levels, nuts are also a good source of heart-healthy antioxidants. Another study carried out earlier this year revealed that walnuts contain higher quality antioxidants than any other nuts. Furthermore, nuts have a longstanding reputation as reliable sources of protein, while also containing important vitamins, unsaturated fats, minerals and dietary fiber.

Dr Cristina Andres-Lacueva of the University of Barcelona insisted that the rising numbers of obesity cases we have seen around the world are a clear indicator that more and more people are developing metabolic syndrome. The prevailing symptoms of this disorder include excess abdominal fat, high blood sugar and high blood pressure, but even slight dietary modifications, such as an increased consumption of nuts, can help patients regain control over their bodies, improve their metabolic rates and boost their energy levels.

"Because of the important role of serotonin in the regulation of energy balance, metabolism, and glucose homeostasis, attention should also be given in the future to the eventual effects of nut intake on the serotoriemic status of subjects with metabolic syndrome", explained the scientists.

For their test, the research team asked a group of 22 individuals that had been previously diagnosed with metabolic syndrome to consume a nut-rich diet, for a period of 12 weeks. These results were then compared to those of a second group of 20 individuals, who were told to avoid consuming any nuts over the 12 week duration of the trial.

The Spanish scientists then analyzed urine samples from both groups, and identified several important differences that could be linked to the presence or absence of nuts from one's diet. Their most important discovery was that nut consumption had effectively boosted serotonin production for the individuals in the test group. Dr Cristina Andres-Lacueva's team holds that this is the first instance when a laboratory study is able to confirm that nut consumption can effectively reduce cardiovascular risk factors in people with metabolic syndrome.

The research was published in the prestigious Journal of Proteome Research of the American Chemical Society.

Common Air Fresheners May Cause Asthma & Allergies

Brian Bartholomew - Monday, November 21, 2011

Study: Exposure to common air fresheners can cause allergies, asthma

by Jonathan Benson, staff writer

(NaturalNews) Millions of Americans use scented candles, air freshener sprays, plug-in deodorizers and diffusers to make their living spaces smell clean and pleasant, but are the chemicals in these products safe? New research compiled by scientists from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., and the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic suggests that various chemical additives in air fresheners can trigger allergies, asthma and other health problems.

"The chemicals in some of these products can trigger the nasal congestion, sneezing and the runny nose," said Dr. Stanley Fineman, an allergist from Emory who helped gather data for the study. "With the asthmatics, there's really good data showing their lung function changes when they're exposed to these compounds."

Many scented air freshener products contain harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, benzene and limonene, which are known to trigger asthma and other respiratory symptoms, as well as eye irritation, bone damage and leukemia. They also contain various other toxic ingredients like benzyl alcohol, camphor, dichlorobenzene, ethanol, naphthalene, phenol and pinene (http://mcs-america.org/airfresh.pdf).

Even some scented products labeled "natural" contain harmful ingredients like phthalates that can build up in the liver and fatty tissue over time. Phthalate exposure is linked to low sperm counts and reproductive damage (http://www.naturalhomeandgarden.com...). This is why it is always a good idea, even with "natural" products, to verify all ingredients with product manufacturers prior to purchasing them.

In 2007, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) tested 14 different brands of popular household air freshener products and found that most of them, even those labeled "all natural" or "unscented," contained dangerous chemicals linked to hormone disruption and reproductive problems (http://www.nrdc.org/media/2007/0709...).

The worst offender in the test was Walgreens Scented Bouquet Air Freshener, which contained 7,300 parts per million (ppm) of di-ethyl phthalate (DEP), a chemical linked to damaging hormones and impairing genital development, followed by Walgreens Air Freshener Spray with 1,100 ppm of DEP.

You can read the full NRDC report here:
http://www.nrdc.org/health/home/air...

"Consumers have a right to know what is put into air fresheners and other everyday products they bring into their homes," said Dr. Gina Solomon back in 2007. "There are too many products on the shelves that we assume are safe, but have never even been tested. The government should be keeping a watchful eye on these household items and the manufacturers who produce them."

More U.S. Children Taking Medications: Stop the Insanity!!

Brian Bartholomew - Sunday, November 20, 2011

Prescription drug use in American children is on the rise.  A 2009 Reuter's study demonstrated that over 1 in every 4 U.S. children uses medication for a chronic condition.1 The biggest increases over the previous year were medication usage for juvenile diabetes, asthma and anti-psychotic drugs.  Researchers are calling these findings "shocking" and dangerous while parents are understandably alarmed.

We all should be alarmed or concerned for multiple reasons, one major reason being the fact that little if any anti-psychotic medications are studied in children. We have no idea what these chemicals are doing to the developing and changing bodies of our children.  We hear too often of kids as young as 3 years old being given cherry flavored Ritilan, teens on Prozac, or elementary students using Vyvance to stay 'focused'.  There has to be a better answer than giving our kids speed!

What are the long term consequences of giving our children anti-psychotic drugs?  Many of these medications come with black box warning labels because they are known to cause mania, suicide, growth retardation as well as heart conditions. Would any parent want to put their children at such a risk?  If these parents knew there were natural and safe options not one parent would even consider these drugs.

Twenty years ago a child with type 2 diabetes was unheard of, now we are well on our way to 1 out of every 3 children being diagnosed with this terrible lifestyle condition. This is the first time in the history of the world that children are not expected to live as long as their parents. What will the future of these children look like?  What will the future of our country and world look like? Obesity and type 2 diabetes are known to take years of the lifespan and add exceptionally high expenses to individual and national health care costs.

How are the lifestyle practices that our media propagates via advertisements and T.V. programs encouraging unhealthy children and unhealthy families?  Children make up the largest demographical increase in pharmaceutical sales since 2009.  Sales are up 18% which is four times higher that the overall population's increase in medication usage for the same year.  More children taking increasingly dangerous medications and pharmaceutical companies are raking in the dollars and driving the problem.  How long will these kids take these medications?  Unless they find another way they will be on their medication for the rest of their shortened lives.  Please help them find a better answer!

Are medications the answer or are they just a temporary fix that allows the individual to continue down the same destructive path? It is time for a revolution in the way we care for our selves and our neighbors. Please reach out to those you care about and get them involved in a form of health that embraces natural healing.

Suggestions for Parents and Kids:

1. Find a Natural Based M.D., Chiropractor, Acupuncturist, Massage Therapist, or Nutritionist.

2. Read articles from mercola.com, naturalnews.com or ithacachiropractic.com and ask questions.

3. Check out our recipes and healthy snack ideas for children especially the smoothies, 25 lunch ideas and healthy desserts.

4. Get yourself and your children on an Omega-3 supplement.  For most adults 2,000mg or 2 capsules and children 1,000mg or 1 capsule. Best brands are BFO from BFC, Carlson's or Nordic Naturals.

5. Avoid or Limit T.V./video game time and get your family active and outside.

CDC Raw Milk Safe

Brian Bartholomew - Thursday, November 17, 2011

CDC admits not a single person has died from consuming raw milk products in 11 years

by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) refuses to acknowledge that, based on all available statistics, raw milk produced on clean, small-scale farms is actually far safer than pasteurized milk from factory farms. But the agency did admit earlier this year, after being pressed and warned of a potential Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request if it failed to comply, that not a single person has died from raw milk consumption in over a decade.

This may come as a shock to some who, because of all the propaganda about the alleged dangers of raw milk, are convinced otherwise, but it is true -- one of the two deaths often cited by the CDC as evidence that raw milk is dangerous was actually linked to the consumption of raw queso fresco cheese, which is currently outlawed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And the other is likely linked to an adulterated raw milk product as well, rather than to raw milk.

After repeatedly petitioning the CDC for clarification about its questionable raw milk statistics and getting nowhere, Mark McAfee, owner of Organic Pastures Dairy Company (OPDC) in California, finally threatened to file a FOIA request to get to the truth. Shortly thereafter, he received a response from an unidentified official at the CDC's information office explaining that the one "raw milk" death that occurred between 1998 and 2008 was actually linked to illegal raw queso fresco cheese.

The agency has not yet provided details about the other death, but it is likely that it, too, was linked to some adulterated raw milk product rather than to raw milk itself. If and when the agency finally fesses up to the truth about that case, it will also be inadvertently admitting that it has lied to the public for many years about the nature of raw milk.

The CDC's continual avoidance of talking about the much worse dangers associated with pasteurized milk further illustrates its raw milk bias. In 2006 alone, there were at least 1,300 people who got sick from pasteurized milk just in California -- and yet the CDC only talks about the roughly 39 reported illnesses every year in the Golden State that are alleged, but not necessarily proven to be, linked to raw milk.

To learn more about the safety of raw milk versus pasteurized milk, check out this FREE chapter from Dr. Ron Schmid's book The Untold Story of Milk: Green Pastures, Contented Cows and Raw Dairy Products:
