Can Fat Cells Be Changed to Muscle Cells?

Just how can lifestyle changes help change fat cells to muscle cells? It is all in the genes. Did you know that genes are not static? They have the ability to be turned on or off. Several recent studies are illustrating how exercise, diet and chiropractic care alters our genes.

Most people have in their family history genes for heart disease and cancer. Everyday I talk to patients who have been scared into taking dangerous, expensive, ‘preventative’ medications because they had a relative who had a heart, lung, skin, breast, arthritic or other condition and it ‘must be genetic’. The truth is that genetics only control around 3% of illness and you can control and change the majority of your genes. Most people do not need to rely on toxic medications which have been proven to do little to nothing to prevent dis-ease and have been shown time and again to cause dis-ease! It is time for a revolution in your thinking and actions!

How can genes be turned on or off? One of the most powerful ways genes are altered is by methylation. Methylation occurs when a group of carbon and hydrogen atoms attach to the edge of a gene altering its recptor sites to different chemicals and proteins. This methylation is mostly driven by the way you choose to live your life.

Food choices alter genes and genetic expression

Studies have shown that the foods you eat effect methylation. Foods like cage free eggs, garlic, leafy greens, onions, salmon, halibut, beans and fruit are great sources of methyl groups for methylation. Unhealthy foods like fast foods, sugars, alcohol, factory farmed meats do the opposite, they require your body to give up the building blocks of methyl groups in attempt to detoxify these destructive foods.

Chiropractic care has been proven to alter you genetic expression

Chiropractic care has been shown to greatly alter genetic expression and methylation. People who receive hands on chiropractic adjustments have been shown to have higher levels of serium thiols. Serium thiols act as anti- oxidants and methyl donors to help the body turn off the genes that cause cancer and heart disease. Chiropractic adjustments have also been shown to lower resting cortisol levels another avenue of turning down inflammation and avoiding many of the lifestyle induced dis-eases.

Exercise, especially high intensity exercise, switches your genes

Did you know exercise too has been shown to alter DNA methylation patterns? Especially in the genes that code for fat storage, obesity and diabetes. Human muscle cells have been shown to have beneficial metabolism boosting changes in methylation following even a single workout. That is right, every workout counts so stop skipping!

High intensity exercise has shown the most profound changes in turning off dis-ease producing genes and turning on muscle building, energy enhancing genes.

The best way to do high intensity exercise is to do intervals of 20-30 seconds of exercise at 70-95% of you maximum capacity.

My favorite exercises are push-ups, pull-ups, standing squats, lunges, burpees, bicycle kicks, toe touches, jumping jacks, sprints, run in place, supermans, donkey kicks, curls, tricept extensions and rows all of which can be done in short bursts. Follow the intense burst of exercise by an equal or slightly greater period of rest and repeat. I typically do 4-6 different exercises per workout with 3 sets of each. The great thing about high intensity exercise or burst training is that it allows you to do an amazing workout in 20 minutes or less.

The thing I find most inspiring about methylation patterns is that they are often passed on from generation to generation. Can you see how your lifestyle and choices effect your future generations?
