Help for Baby with Colic, Constipation or Gas

by Dr. Brian Bartholomew

Many babies have problems with colic, constipation and/or gas.

Hours of crying, loss of sleep and lack of weight gain can stress parents and baby to the max. Rest assured, there are natural, safe, pharmaceutical free remedies like chiropractic care and Anise Mint Digestive Tea to help with these issues.

The nerves exiting the upper neck area, the mid back and the lower back areas are critical for digestive health. Abnormal alignment in the spine or subluxations block nerve transmission and cause organs and tissues to function less than optimally.

DSCN0128Specifically, with subluxations on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, the tone of the smooth muscle contraction in the digestive tracts as well as the opening and closing of the smooth muscle sphincters is greatly altered often causing digestive chaos. Safe, gentle chiropractic adjustments from a trained pediatric chiropractor help remove nerve interference and allow children to heal.

Other often overlooked or down played causes of digestive distress are food sensitivities, food intolerances or food allergies. The most common foods that irritate babies are dairy, soy, caffeine, wheat, cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli), onions, garlic, eggs (especially non-organic, non free range eggs). Try avoiding these foods for 1-2 weeks and monitor your baby. Also, be conscious of mom staying super hydrated and drinking almost 3/4th her body weight in ounces. E.g. if mom weighs 100lbs she needs to drink 75oz per day!!

The most noted folk remedy for baby’s digestive challenges is:

Anise Mint Digestive Tea for BabiesIMG_2579

  • 2 cups fresh anise leaves
  • 2 cups fresh mint leaves
  • 2 quarts filtered water

Bring water to a boil and pour over anise and mint. Let steep until the water cools. Strain. Give tepid tea to your baby 4 ounces at a time. Another option is to have the nursing mother drink the tea and her colicky baby will still get the benefits.
