Help For Scoliosis and Poor Posture

 by Brian Bartholomew D.C.

My Wife’s Scoliosis Story

My wife wore a back brace for 22 hours a day for two years when we were in high school to help with her scoliosis and poor posture. After bracing failed, she was told that surgery was the only option. Her M.D. said that without surgery her back curve would worsen and she would end up in wheelchair by the age of 30 and would be unable to have children.  Thankfully she likes to prove people wrong and she found a better way: regular chiropractic care. Her spine has improved greatly, we have two healthy children and she is not in a wheelchair.

The New Science of Chiropractic Care for Scoliosis

The December of 2016, the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health showed that chiropractic care had a positive affect for the improvement of Idiopathic Scoliosis.
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is an abnormal curve in the spine that is normally an elongated “S” or “C” shape when looking at the spine from the front. As you know, the spine should be a straight line from the front, not a “C” or “S”.  Adolescent spinal curvatures occur in 5-10% of children between ages 10 and 16 years.

In this study, 36 subjects 18 years or younger were included and had been under chiropractic care in the past 5 years. All patients had a curve of at least 11 degrees measured on x-rays. Each of those patients must had a follow-up x-ray after at least two weeks of chiropractic care.

In the group with a scoliosis of 11 degrees or greater, the average age at pre x-ray was 10.77 years old. The average number of adjustments given to the post x-ray was 5.75. The difference between pre and post x-ray was 39.43 days. As a result of the chiropractic care, the average improvement of scoliosis within the group was 25.96%. Also, 9 out of 14 patients showed improvement, 2 showed no change.

In the sub-scoliosis group with a curvature of less than 11 degrees, the average age of pre x-ray was 8.91 years old. The average number of adjustments given before the post x-ray was 6.41. The average time between pre and post x-ray was 141.32 days. In this group, 18 of 22 patients showed improvement with the average improvement being 51.84%.  Six patients showed 100% improvement in sub-scoliotic curves over the time of their care.
